JMW Air Sens BLDC hair dryer with stand, black or white

JMW Air Sens is a Korean salon hair dryer built around a brushless BLDC motor. The maker calls it the Advanced Power Digital BLDC Motor 3.0 and says it spins faster than its earlier motors while staying balanced at high revs. It is rated at 1700 W and runs on 220 V, 60 Hz. The dryer comes as a set with a stand, in a black or white body (the white model is MS7001A); the specs are the same for both colours.

Speed and heat have separate controls: 5 airflow steps and 3 heat levels - cool, warm and hot - for 15 combinations in total. The maker singles out the warm setting as a step designed for styling. Hold the heat button and the dryer switches straight to cold air; press it again to go back to the previous setting. The motor and heater are controlled independently, so on the cold setting only the motor runs and the air is not warmed. In the maker's measurement at a room temperature of 24 °C, the Air Sens cold stream was 27 °C, against 34-55 °C for three DC-motor dryers from other brands.

According to the maker, air speed is 13.5 m/s, and in its comparison drying took 2.7 minutes, against 3.5 minutes for JMW's own BLDC dryer, 5.5 minutes for its DC dryer and 6.3 minutes for its AC dryer. The maker does not say how that drying test was set up.

The maker commissioned a test in Korea: in 2019 the P&K Skin Clinical Research Center compared the Air Sens with JMW's own DC-motor dryer. It was done on tresses of human hair rather than on people, so no number of participants is given. After 3 minutes of warm air, shine measured in pixels rose from 60,665 to 106,866 with the Air Sens and from 61,545 to 64,731 with the DC dryer; after 10 minutes the maker's micrographs show a smoother cuticle. These are the manufacturer's figures, not our own measurements.

How it differs from other tools. A curling iron or flat iron works one section at a time and shapes the curl or the finish. A dryer handles the whole head and does not set the curl pattern itself: to dry a perm without losing the curl, pair it with the JMW diffuser. The Air Sens makes sense for stylists who have a dryer running all day: a cold shot with no residual heat, a dedicated warm step and a light 424 g body.

Pick a nozzle. The Cool Nozzle is a concentrator with a double wall; according to the maker, its edge stays cooler on the hot setting. The Curling Nozzle has a wavy edge for round-brush work: air escapes between the ridges, so you can hold it close to the brush. Airflow is set with the slider and heat with the button; to set the style, hold the heat button to switch to cold air.

The maker warns that the nozzle still heats up during long use, so keep hands and the client's skin at a safe distance. The handle has electromagnetic shielding, and a bimetal thermostat and a thermal fuse protect against overheating.
