Gratia Anion Volume Up Rods are Korean perm rods for classic chemical perms, designed first of all for root volume. The box carries the brand name GRATIA ROD and the model name ANION Volume Up Rod. They are made by Gratia in Korea under Korean patent 10-1671749. You can order them as a medium set or as single rods by size, from No. 1 at 25 mm down to No. 10 at 7 mm.

The body is not solid. It is an open cage of lengthwise ribs with gaps in between. According to the manufacturer, this vented design lets the perm lotion and the neutralizer soak in twice as fast, and the rod weighs about half as much as a standard one. Each end has a ledge that holds the rubber band in place. The manufacturer says this stops band marks from showing on the hair after the service and lets the neutralizer run through the grooves evenly. The rods are made of polycarbonate, which the manufacturer describes as resistant to alkali, surfactants, steam, heat and UV, and not prone to fading over time.

How Gratia differs from Create digital perm rods. Create rods plug into a machine and heat up, so they belong to hot perm work. Gratia rods have no heating at all. They are for cold perms, where the lotion sets the curl at room temperature. So they do not replace machine rods. They cover a different job: lift at the root, root perms, spiral perms and gentle conditioning perms on rods.

Your own technique and the instructions for the perm lotion you use set the procedure. For the rods themselves, the manufacturer gives a few rules:

1. Do not wind damaged hair with a lot of tension. The rod builds in tension by design, and extra pull stretches the hair.

2. On damaged hair and texturized cuts, wrap the ends in end papers folded down the section so the tips do not crimp.

3. For strong root lift, set the rod at an angle of about 120° to the scalp.

4. When a section is thin, cross the rubber band over the rod in an X.
