How to choose a digital perm machine for your salon

The short version

A digital perm machine is the main investment when a salon adds Korean hot perms to its menu. It decides how precisely you can hold the temperature on every rod, how many clients you can work on at once and how comfortable the setup is at the chair day after day. This guide walks through how to choose a Korean perm machine: which specs matter, what to ask the supplier before you order and what else you need for the service besides the machine itself.

Digital perms and the machine: how they differ from other techniques

In a classic cold perm the section is wound on perm rods, the lotion is applied and left to process without heated rods. Some stylists add warmth with a steamer or a heat cap, but no machine is involved.

A digital perm works differently. After the hair has been processed with the solution, the section is wound on heated rods, the rods are plugged into the machine and the curl is set under controlled heat. That combination of softened hair and dry heat on the rod is what gives the soft, natural-looking wave people usually mean by a Korean digital perm.

Compared with shaping the hair with a flat iron or curling iron, the key difference is consistency. With an iron the result depends on every pass of your hand: how long you held it, how much tension you put on the section. With a digital perm the machine sets the temperature and time, and all rods run on the same program. You handle the consultation, solution, rod size and winding - the machine keeps the heat the same all over the head.

How a Korean perm machine works

Every digital perm machine has three main parts: the control unit, the cables and the heated rods.

  • **Rods.** These are rollers with a heater inside. You wind the section on the rod and plug the rod into the machine's cable. The diameter sets the curl size, the length sets how much hair fits on it.
  • **Heating.** The machine sends heat to the rods according to the program. What matters is that the temperature stays even along the whole rod and recovers quickly if the rod has cooled down while you were winding.
  • **Temperature and time control.** You pick a program or set the temperature and time by hand. A good machine shows the current and set temperature and the remaining time on its display, and alerts you if a rod is disconnected or faulty.
  • **Cooling.** After heating, the rods cool down and the curl sets in its new shape. Many machines use a fan for this.

The final setting always depends on the solution and the condition of the hair.

What to look for when choosing a digital perm machine

Number of rods and working on more than one client

Work out how many rods you need for one head with your technique and typical hair length, and check how many rods the machine can run. If your salon is busy, it helps to be able to split the rods between two clients and work on them in parallel. Ask the supplier how many rods come with the machine and whether you can buy extra rods individually.

Temperature range and timers

Different hair and different solutions need different settings: healthy, coarse hair needs one approach, damaged hair another. Check the machine's temperature range, the step size and whether you can set the time manually rather than only choosing a preset. Presets save time, but experienced stylists also need manual control.

Monitoring every rod

With a temperature sensor on each rod, you can see that all the rods are heating the same way. An alarm for a bad connection saves you from the situation where one rod never heated up and a section came out without a curl.

Wall-mounted or on a stand

A wall-mounted machine keeps the floor clear and suits a fixed station. A machine on a wheeled stand can be rolled to any chair or moved to another room.

Rod compatibility

Rods are usually not interchangeable between machines: the connector, the heater and the sensors differ. Before buying rods, check which model they are made for.

Voltage and plug

Korean equipment is built for the Korean power grid. If your salon is in another country, confirm the voltage and plug type with the supplier in advance and plan an adapter or another solution for your local supply.

Spare parts and support

Ask whether you can order individual rods and parts, how long shipping takes and who helps if something breaks.

Training

Digital perms take skill: consultation, choice of solution, application method, winding and heat settings. If you are new to the technique, getting the machine with training lets you start from a proven method.

Create Wave Master: specs

Create Wave Master is a Korean machine for hot-rod digital perms. The rods are wrapped in a thin-film heater, each rod has its own temperature sensor, and the LCD display shows current and set temperature plus set and remaining time. If a rod is disconnected or faulty, a lamp flashes and an alarm sounds. When a program ends, a fan cools the rods. The machine is designed for two clients at once, with the rods split between them.

The machine head is the same in both versions - the difference is how it is mounted.

Each program has sub-settings by hair condition: coarse healthy, normal, slightly damaged and very damaged. The S-, M- and L-Style programs differ by section length: S is for hair long enough for 1-2 turns around the rod, L for about 3 turns. Special Mode is two-stage heating: mode A goes from high to low temperature, mode B from low to high. The final setting is your call, based on the solution and the client's hair.

**Which rods it takes.** The machine uses Create Wave Master rods: regular 9 cm rods and long 13 cm rods for long hair, sold individually, with the diameter chosen as a variant. You can recognise them by the brown body and pink silicone ring. Create rods for Minimini machines are a separate line, and the manufacturer does not state that they fit the Wave Master. If your salon already runs a Minimini machine, get the rods made for it.

The machine is supplied to order from Korea, and you choose the version when ordering. Terms, lead times and the option with training are on the Machine and training page. The full equipment range is in the digital perm machines category.

What else you need for the service

The machine is only part of the station. To start offering digital perms, you will also need:

  • **Rods in the right diameters.** Build a set around your technique and your clients' typical hair length, with long rods for long hair. Wave Master rods are sold individually, so you can grow the set over time.
  • **A digital perm solution.** For example, Beati Miracle Silky Glow - a cysteamine-based line with an H solution for healthy hair, an N solution for damaged hair and a neutralizer; H and N can be mixed to suit the hair. Or Beati Multi Silky Glow - an acidic pH 3.0 solution with its neutralizer, one solution for healthy and damaged hair, for both classic and hot perms. How to match a solution to the hair and the technique is covered in our guide How to choose a Korean perm solution. Beati solutions are in the Korean perm solutions category, and solutions for rod perms without a machine are in cold perm lotions.
  • **A hair steamer.** Useful at stages where the solution works in a warm, moist environment, as well as for cold perms and treatments. Our range includes the Create O3 Mistimer, which delivers mist and steam at the same time, the Asia Electronics Eco Quick Steamer, the Airafa Himitsu Head Spa with programs for perms, colour and treatments, and the hood-style Airafa Ion Spa Care. See all models in hair steamers.
  • **Spare rods.** Rods wear out and go missing faster than anything else, so keep spares in the sizes you use most. Wave Master rods, Minimini rods and perm rods for work without a machine are in perm rods and consumables.

Checklist before you buy a machine

1. How many digital perm clients a day you expect, and whether you need to work on two clients at once.

2. What temperature range and timers your solutions need, and whether you can set everything manually.

3. Whether there is a sensor on every rod and an alarm if a rod is not connected.

4. Wall-mounted or on a stand: one station or several rooms.
