Hair steamer for salons: how to choose

Author: Oksana Prisyazhnaya, founder of Silkybon and Versiya Lab studio · updated

Short answer

A salon hair steamer keeps perm lotion, colour or a treatment warm and moist while it processes, so the product does not dry out and every strand develops the same way. When you choose one, look at five things: how it makes moisture (mist, steam or both), whether it works under a hood or through a hose and cap, how precisely you can set temperature and time, whether it has ozone or ions, and how much floor space it takes. Below we go through each point and compare the four Korean steamers in our hair steamer catalog.

What a hair steamer does in a salon

A steamer turns water from its tank into warm moisture and delivers it to the hair. The client sits either under a clear dome or with a processing cap on, and a hose sends the moisture under the cap. Stylists use it for three main jobs:

  • Perms and straightening. The first lotion processes in moist heat instead of dry air, so the curl comes out even from roots to ends.
  • Colour and lightener. A controlled, humid environment keeps the product from drying on the surface.
  • Treatments and scalp care. Masks and scalp products work under warm mist for a set time.

The key word is control. A home facial steamer or a simple boiler gives one stream of hot steam with no temperature in degrees and no timer. A salon steamer holds the mode you set and repeats it from client to client, which is what makes the result predictable.

Mist, steam, ozone and ions

Manufacturers describe four ways a steamer can treat the hair. The effects below are their claims; the final result always depends on the product, the time and the settings the stylist chooses.

  • Steam. Water is boiled and the flow cools to a working temperature on the way out. Warm and humid.
  • Mist. Very fine moisture. In some units it is made by ultrasonic vibration without boiling, so the hair gets moisture rather than dry heat. The Airafa Himitsu works this way, with particles the maker puts at about 3 microns.
  • Ozone. Several makers say a low level of ozone helps oxidation at the neutralising stage and removes the smell after a service. The Airafa Ion Spa Care and the Asia Electronics Eco Quick Steamer both state about 0.025 ppm.
  • Negative ions. Mist with negative ions, according to makers, reduces static and helps the hair hold moisture. The Airafa Ion Spa Care has a dedicated ion button.

Hood or hose and cap

This is the first practical decision, because it changes how the station works.

A hood unit stands behind the chair with a clear dome over the client's head. Mist fills the dome and surrounds the whole head evenly, and there is no hose to keep in place. It suits salons that run a lot of treatments and scalp care and have room behind the chair.

A hose unit sends mist or steam through a flexible hose under a processing cap. It is lighter, usually takes less floor space and moves easily between chairs. It suits perm and colour work where the cap is already part of the routine.

What to check before you buy

Moisture type and output

Decide whether you need mist, steam or both at once. The Create O3 Mistimer and the Asia Electronics Eco Quick Steamer deliver mist and steam together; the Airafa Himitsu uses ultrasonic mist with 4 levels; the Airafa Ion Spa Care fills a hood with ion mist.

Temperature and time control

For perms this matters most. Look for a temperature set in degrees and a timer. The Mistimer goes from 35 to 60 °C in 5 °C steps with A and B modes. The Himitsu sets 40-60 °C in 5 °C steps. The Ion Spa Care keeps the hood at 40-50 °C, according to the maker. The Eco Quick Steamer has 3 heat levels and 3 steam levels instead of exact degrees, with a stated output of 35-45 °C.

Programmes

Preset programmes save time for a busy team. The Himitsu has three: perm and straightening (10 minutes, mist 1, 50 °C), colour and lightening (12 minutes, mist 2, 45 °C) and treatment (15 minutes, mist 3, 55 °C), and each can be changed by hand. The Ion Spa Care has three treatment programmes. The Mistimer and the Eco Quick Steamer are set manually.

Tank and working day

A large tank means fewer refills. The Mistimer has the largest stated tank in our range, 2,800 ml. The Himitsu keeps a distilled-water tank and a drain bottle behind a door in the cabinet, and shows a low-water warning.

Footprint and mobility

Measure the space behind and beside the chair. The Himitsu is a narrow cabinet with a 21 cm base and a hose that extends from 52 to 102 cm. The Eco Quick Steamer is a slim column on a five-castor stand. The Mistimer stands on castors and also comes in a wall-mounted version. The Ion Spa Care is a hood on a height-adjustable stand.

Power supply

These are Korean units. The Mistimer is listed for 220 V, 60 Hz or 100 V, 50-60 Hz, and the Himitsu for 220 V, 50 Hz. For the Ion Spa Care and the Eco Quick Steamer the maker does not state the voltage, so we confirm voltage and plug type when you order.

Which steamer suits which salon

  • Mostly perms and straightening, exact settings wanted: the Create O3 Mistimer. Temperature in 5 °C steps, A and B modes, a 2,800 ml tank and an air filter, plus a wall-mounted option.
  • Head spa and treatments, several services in a row: the Airafa Himitsu Head Spa. Ultrasonic mist, three editable programmes and two outlets, A and B. It comes in white or rose gold.
  • Treatments under a dome, dry or static-prone hair: the Airafa Ion Spa Care S2019, with its ion button and ozone.
  • A small salon where one unit moves between chairs: the Asia Electronics Eco Quick Steamer. It is compact, has a touch panel that works with gloves on, separate steam and heat levels, and a cap in the box.

A steamer in the digital perm workflow

In a perm salon the steamer works alongside the machine: the lotion processes in moist heat under a cap, and the neutraliser can go under ozone. The Asia Electronics starting settings show this split - 8-10 minutes of medium steam and heat for the first lotion, then 5 minutes of ozone only for the second. If you are fitting out a perm station, choose the steamer together with the machine. How the machine heats the rods and what the stylist sets is covered in the guide How to choose a digital perm machine, and the full station list is in What you need for a Korean perm.

On a tighter budget, look at used hair steamers from Korea: each unit is listed with the seller's photos, the year and its condition.

Buyer questions

What is the difference between a hair steamer and a hair processor?

A steamer adds moisture: mist or steam around the hair. A hair processor heats the hair with infrared, without moisture. For perm lotion, colour and treatments that need a humid environment, salons use a steamer.

Do I need ozone?

It is optional. Makers say ozone helps oxidation at the neutralising stage and removes the smell after a service. If you neutralise without it, a steamer with mist and steam and good temperature control is enough.

Hood or hose - which is better for perms?

Both work. A hose and cap is the more common setup for perms because the cap is already on the client and the unit is easy to move. A hood suits treatments and scalp care, where the whole head should be in mist.

Can I use distilled water?

The Airafa Himitsu is designed for a distilled-water tank. For the other models, follow the maker's manual: message us and we will send what the maker provides.
